No..not ship or train wrecks...Im talking guitar wrecks.

This pic is of an Ibanez plywood special that was sent to me by its owner who'd heard that I was a luthier. "Do with it what you can" he said, "if you cant do anything then send it to the dump".

The story behind the carnage...the instrument was sitting propped against a wall at a wild party in Perth, West Australia...and someone sat on it.

When I first saw the splintered mess I thought "youve got to be joking". However having looked at the thing frequently over the last 6 months Ive decided to do the owner a big favour and build a replica. It will incorporate the original machine heads and strap ferrules but the rest of the instrument will be brand new.

No other kind of party to go to over here Martin, I have an old plywood Suzuki SSS that I keep for just such occasions, it has broken my fall many times when I was younger. Don't think it would handle the impact now days though

Anyhow it is a very kind gesture, your mate will not believe your generosity or be able to get the grin off his face after the first strum.

The neck looks like you could reuse it as well. Pull the rest of the fret board off maybe.

How about just pricing the guy a new guitar? When you look at the damage, it has affected both sides, the top and the back, maybe the neck is salvagable and the bridge and you will even need another bridge pin.

The guy is a workmate and he kind of loved this instrument. The shape
and dimensions are ok its just a shodily built guitar made with cheap
materials. The guitar I build will look like the original but construction
method will be alot different and materials will be better.

I second this statement! Even if it is an Ibanez replica you are making, I'm sure it will be 100% better than an Ibanez. Very nice thing to do Martin!
